Late at night, someone comes ringing their doorbell and neither Astrid nor Heather are expecting anyone. Certainly not at this hour.

Having torn herself away from her wife and their warm bed, tying a bathrobe closed to hide the lingerie she wears for her underneath, Astrid comes down the stairs. There’s a small , rectangular window next to the front door. Just to make sure it isn’t some kind of an unsavory type who comes knocking because they know two very helpless women live here, she takes a peek beyond the even smaller curtain. Astrid takes that peek, but she doesn’t answer her. Not immediately, as she needs a second to wrap her head around who she sees standing there. And not verbally at least. It’s the widening of her eyes and the way she rushes to unlock the front door that has her hurrying down the stairs on bare feet.

“Astrid, what’s-” Heather can’t finish her sentence before her wife flings the door open and they see who’s standing on the other side at this late hour. It’s past midnight.

It’s Hiccup. With a black eye, a bloody nose, a bloodied shirt underneath flannel because of his nose, and bruises around his throat. He’s not even wearing his shoes, he has them in hand. Both women stare at him in shock.

“I didn’t-” Gods, his voice is barely there and it hurts him to talk. “I didn’t know where else to go.”

Needless to say, they invite him in immediately.

Moments later, he’s on their couch, holding his nose and sitting on the very edge to make sure he doesn’t bleed on their furniture. He can’t afford the cleaning bill. Heather offers him a tissue box to use and he thanks her quietly, taking a handful to stop the bleeding with. Meanwhile, Astrid is searching for her phone.

“Where is my phone? Heather, where did I leave my phone?!” She asks her spouse, who has disappeared into the kitchen to grab him a glass of water and some painkillers. With a doubt, that throat of his is killing him. She calls back something about the dinner table and that’s where Astrid finds it. It’s underneath a bill that arrived today.

She doesn’t make it a habit to lose things, especially not important things, but tonight is rather out of the ordinary.

“Why?” Hiccup asks and looks up at her, unnerved by the idea. He doesn’t even know if he has his on him.

“To call the police and-”

“No!” He’s up in an instance to stop her and Astrid halts to stare at him. Dumbfounded, phone halfway up to her ear already. He’s obviously been attacked and he doesn’t want the police involved? Holding an empty glass, Heather comes out to take a look at what’s causing the shouting.

And when a look of disappointment crosses her face as the phone lowers and she hangs up, he knows he was right to worry. He drops back down on the couch. Feeling guilty, his arms wrap around himself. At least his nosebleed is slowing.

“You sold yourself? Again?” Astrid asks and he nods, hanging his head. And clearly, whoever his client had been hadn’t been just a little rough with him.

“I… I agreed to see just the one guy, but…” Not having the guts to look her in the eye as he confesses, Hiccup holds up three fingers. Three men were waiting for him instead of just the one he was expecting to meet. No wonder he’s so beat up.

“Please, tell me you got out of there as soon as you could,” Astrid tells him, sounding closer to a disappointed parent more than a friend. Heather joins them again, glass still empty in her hand. She may not have been in his life for very long, she still cares.

Both wives watch as he shakes his head. No, for whatever reason he still tried to do whatever it was that he agreed to do with one man with the three of them, probably hoping to earn more. The bruises and the bloody nose aren’t from him trying to get away. Pulling on the collar of his flannel shirt, the two can see that the hand-shaped blues and purples and reds don’t quite hide the even darker teeth marks at this angle.

Sighing before dropping down on the armchair next to him, Astrid rests her cheek on the palm of her hand as she watches him wallow in his shame. She wonders just what she’s going to do with him.
